Evalyn does not like to give interviews, but she will appear in person if bribed by rocky road ice cream. Allen, on the other hand, has given hundreds of TV, Radio, Film and video interviews and conducted seminars for writers, therapists, veterans and law enforcement officers across America and in Europe. His talks to writers included a storytelling conference in Brazil, multiple seminars at the Tucson Festival of Books, the PEN America Writing Workshop, the Desert Sleuths conference, several Society of Southwestern Authors conferences, Southern Expressions Mississippi conference, and many others. He mixes serious themes with funny stories and anecdotes. Ice cream not required, but encouraged.
I Am the White Horse has thought-provoking themes, intense love scenes and hilarious conversations between characters, and Allen acts out funny scenes during talks about the characters and story.
The serious themes include 1800s racism, genocide of Native American Indians, vicious treatment of Black plantation slaves, discrimination against the Irish, religious conflict, demons, grief and the greed and violence of the American gold rush.
However, in contrast to the brutality of the time, the characters demonstrate kindness, love, humor, loyalty, heroism, self-sacrifice, spirituality, family values, empathy, the importance of education and fulfilling our dreams, slow-burn romance and spicy lovemaking, as well as our connection to our ancestors, the supernatural and paranormal.
