    Having four brothers, I grew up a tough girl. I always thought I could do what my brothers did, much like my character, Little Dove. I wanted her to become a worthy woman, not a weakling that couldn’t take care of herself. She had natural talents that evolved as she grew up and I envisioned her as a great warrior.
   I feel a connection to Native Americans. When a hawk circled and dropped a feather, I kept it, as the hawk has healing power. A hawk totem is a messenger of truth.
   I liked the way Native Americans treated health issues with herbs and plants. They preserved the forests and animals, as they only took what they needed to survive. And they used everything from the skins and furs to the bones.

    Native Americans have relationships with animals and communicate with them. They believe that life is sacred and respect their elders for their knowledge.
   Over the years, my husband and I visited thirty-five Native American sites in six states and I’ve written perhaps a hundred articles about my travels for magazines and newspapers.
   I attended my co-author’s writing classes and felt encouraged to write several drafts of this book. Then Allen and I collaborated and the result is I Am the White Horse.

   Author Allen Kates is an editor and ghostwriter. He wrote the internationally acclaimed bestseller, CopShock, Surviving Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), first and second editions. The book exposes in vivid and violent detail the lives of 13 police officers afflicted with PTSD and what they did to survive it. He ghostwrote more than a dozen fiction and nonfiction books such as Gifts My Father Gave Me and Just Plain Dorothy: the Life of Dorothy Hunt Finley.

   In the past, he produced, directed and wrote hundreds of television documentaries and current affairs programs on numerous subjects such as the Inuit on Baffin Island, the indigenous people of Alberta, humpback whales, discrimination against First Nations people, police brutality, squid fishing, child kidnapping and the lives of those with physical and mental disabilities. As well as serious programs, he has produced lighthearted shows such as musical/comedy shows and a comedy series for the CTV television network.

   Allen has a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (MFAW) degree from Goddard College, a program he describes as “writers’ boot camp,” and has conducted workshops in creative writing, memoirs, novels, screenwriting, self-editing and publishing. He is Board Certified in Emergency Crisis Response (BCECR) by the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress (AAETS). For several years, he was a development executive at Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation in Hollywood.

   He has given hundreds of TV, Radio, Film and video interviews and conducted seminars for writers, therapists, veterans  and law enforcement officers across America and in Europe. His talks about writing included a storytelling conference in Brazil, Ghostwriting at the Tucson Festival of Books, the PEN America Writing Workshop, the Desert Sleuths conference, Society of Southwestern Authors, Southern Expressions Mississippi conference, and many others. He mixes serious themes with funny stories and anecdotes.
   I Am the White Horse has serious themes, intense love scenes and hilarious exchanges between characters, and Allen acts out funny scenes about the characters and story during talks .

   Allen and Evalyn have known each other for more than 25 years, having met when she attended several of his writing classes.

 —Sherry Bryant, Spirit Animal Artist

   A well-known award-winning animal artist, Sherry painted a series depicting Spirit Animals connected to Native American culture. Many of her illustrations, converted to black and white, adorn the pages of this book . She sold her work throughout California and Arizona for decades and taught art at Tucson’s Drawing Studio.
