Little Dove is attacked (excerpt continued)
“We’d love to chat, but the Colonel needs proof we found ya,” said the
other soldier.
“You won’t feel a thing,” said the booming voice, chuckling. He stepped
into the light and drew a skinning knife.
“After we take a turn,” said the other, unbuttoning his fly.
Little Dove threw dirt on the fire and rolled into the darkness. Boom!
She felt a bullet pass through her hair.
The blast deafened them to the hiss of her long blade as she drew it
from the scabbard.
The chuckling soldier felt a tingle on his neck. The other felt his
carbon steel skinning knife melt into his hand and screamed when his face burst
into flames.
She heard loose gravel crunch at the cave opening and saw a man’s
outline. She raised her blade to strike again…
“It’s
ourselves,” shouted James.
“I’m
here,” she cried and fell into his arms.
James led her past the bodies to the outside. In the light of a
half-moon, he saw her tangled hair, her dirty face. In her fist was a long,
bloody knife. She was exquisite.
Little Dove thanked the Creator for
bringing her man back. For now, she didn’t have to think of hiding, of trying
to fend off the world’s horror men. James would take care of everything and she
didn’t have to pray to the stars for help.
He wrapped his arm around her neck and pulled her to him. He kissed her
neck and her mouth and they held each other for triple moon time.
